Hudson Family Crest and Name History
.Our Family.
Just like all families we have the full range of characters.
A positive look at the family is not complete in only discovering the treasure and enjoying the pleasure of the family. We
must also recognize the measure of influence our family has upon us as individuals, upon the world in which we live, and
upon future generations.
When someone rises to a high position in world leadership and influence, the first information the world wants to know is,
"What is the family history?" What culture or life-style has caused the talent or creative ability in this particular celebrity?
Which persons influenced his or her character? What was and is the home life like?
Upon reading only a few of the volumes of biographies of well known people, one will quickly sense that indeed the family
_the home and the individuals in it-or the lack of family-greatly influences the actions and life changing decisions of adults
and young persons. It makes them who they are, and in turn, the family molds and shapes future generations.
Name the person or persons who have shaped our world in art or music, politics or science. Look beyond those persons
to the families and homes and that molded them. We cannot fully measure the effect of the family, any family. Like the
wake of a ship that leaves an unending ripple in an enormous sea, a family's influence can extend far beyond our sight or knowledge.

Hudson is a name of Anglo-Saxon origin and come from the name Hudd, a pet
form of both ....Hugh and Richard. The surname Hudson features the patroymic ...suffix.......son, which was most common in the north of England and super-
seded other patronymic suffixes in popularity during the 14 th century.
Spelling variations in names were a common occurrence before English spelling
was standardized a few hundred years ago. In the Middle Ages, even the literate spelled their names differently as the English language incorporated elements of Frence, Latin, and other European languages. Many variations of the name Hud-
son have been found, including Hudson, Hutson and other. First found in York-
shire where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political
and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation
in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people.
Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America
were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become
for new powerful nations. Among the first immigrants of the name hudson, or a variant listed above to cross the Atlantic and come to North America were: Ro-
bert Hudson, who arrived in Virginia in 1623; William Hudson, who settled in Vir-
ginia in 1635; Ralph Hudson, who settled in Massachusetts with his wife Maria
and three children in 1635.
In reference to the Family Crests: and it's elements; the Hudson coat of arms as
in all arms the crest is only one element of the full armorial achievement. Again
the Family Crest is just part of the story of Coats of Arms or Heraldry. Heraldry
is defined as the hereditary art or science of blazoning, the description is ap- propriate technical terms of Coats-of-arms and other heraldic and armorial insig-
nia, and is of very ancient origin.
Now, based on the annals of documented American History in particularly pertain-
ing to the exploitation of African American Slaves, attached to all of it's ugly turns
of events. I find myself facing a age old and perplexing dilemma in which has
cause debate among scholars, historians and genealogists as to whether en-
slaved African Americans used the surnames of their current owners, previous owners, or a sur-name that had no connection to slavery at all. It is unknown at
this particular time whether there were any descendants of our particular family
who lived as a docu-mented slave. Furthermore: it is also unknown how the sur- name of Hudson was acquired.
